2017 CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR WRAP UP FROM RENE FLORES, TDLA PRESIDENT
2017 was a great year for the association. We started the year with our biggest trivia night ever, raising over $5,500 for the Cure Starts now. Trivia night was followed by the highly successful inaugural barefoot lawn bowls where members were able to mingle with staff and students from James Cook University. The welcome drinks for the Chief Justice and our annual Noob night were welcome casual engagements for members before the festive season. Our annual ball, held at the Pier Restaurant, was a sold out event and the organising committee even managed to organise a few fireworks for the night. The year finished off with our annual Christmas party at the Heritage Bar where, once again, our members we are able to enjoy each other’s company and share a drink or two.
We must congratulate Ms Diane Turner and Mr Greg Humphries who were both awarded life membership to the association. Both members are respected practitioners and have supported the association for many years. Our congratulations also go to Mr Ken Taylor, who was elected as president of the Queensland Law Society for the 2018 year. We are looking forward to working with Ken in the coming year.
Our thanks to the North Queensland Bar Association for extending an invitation to our members to attend their Christmas in July drinks and for their continued support of our compulsory professional development seminars. The committee looks forward to working more closely with the bar and our members in delivering these seminars. Our thanks also go to His Honour, The Honourable Justice North and the court staff for facilitating the streaming of the Selden Lecture Series, Current Legal Issues seminars and, more recently, the Cairns Judiciary CPD series. The committee is working hard to continue the CPD lecture series throughout 2018. We have been able to secure sponsorship from Lexon and have arranged for Mr Stafford Shepherd, Senior Ethics Solicitor at QLS, to deliver a CPD seminar in February 2018. More information will be released shortly.
Unfortunately, the closure of the LawRight office in Townsville was a loss to the community and placed extra burden on our other community legal centres. In 2018, we will work on lobbying our local and state representatives to work on important issues/measures for the Townsville legal community.
I would like to thank our committee members from their tireless efforts and their continued support during my term as president. The events and seminars we present would not be possible without their efforts and the generous time they volunteer.
On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank the judiciary, magistracy, local bar and our members for their continued support and assistance throughout the year. We wish you all a safe and festive season and look forward to 2018.
